Australian shares still high

NZPA Sydney Australian share markets closed at very high levels again yesterday, but off their all-time highs, as interest in resource and gold stocks offset falls in the media and banking sectors. The markets are trading cautiously because several major players in the share price index futures market are believed to hold large futures positions which must be closed out before the spot contract expires next Tuesday. By the close of trading the all ordinaries index had risen 3.4 points to 1463.8, passing Monday’s record close of 1460.4. The index reached 1465.0 in early business. The all industrials index closed 0.8 points up at 2327.5, from Monday’s record 2326.7, after earlier reaching 2330.4. The all resources index gained 5.5 points to 808.6 and the gold index 19.9 to 1758.1. A strong rise in crude oil prices in Europe overnight sent investors scurrying for oil and gas stocks, but profittaking trimmed back gains towards the close. BHP, Australia’s largest oil producer, rose 14c to 884
