Police sponsorship
Sir,—ln suggesting that our police force should accept private funding and sponsorship our Government shows its ignorance of its own role. In a free society, as will eventually occur after the destruction of socialism in New Zealand, a government is limited to two functions. These are the protection of our people against the use of force and fraud. This involves maintaining strong wellequipped armed forces, law courts, penal institutions and a well-trained, efficient police force. No other governmental action is permissible in a decent society. These functions, especially the administration of justice, should be carried out zealously — cost no object. A sound defence system and an efficient justice and policing organisation are worth more than whatever they cost. — Yours, etc., T. R. LOUDON. December 17, 1986.
