Child-care costs
Sir, —E. Nurse (December 16) needs to rationalise her argument. Kindergarten and childcare centres, to my mind, are two separate institutions; one facility offering a carefully structured pre-school programme, the other providing child care. My husband and I choose to provide the child care for our family between us. I therefore find the suggestion that our tax input be used to partially fund (50 per cent) those who decide to put the care of their children in the hands of others, abhorrent. Neither my husband nor I suggest for a moment that E. Nurse not return to the workforce, but agree that if this is done then it should be at a cost to E. Nurse, not an already overtaxed public. Is E. Nurse aware that child-care fees may be claimed as taxdeductible and that this represents a 30 per cent reduction in fees? —Yours, etc., KAREN HARRISON. Rangiora, December 16, 1986.
