Fireworks

Sir,—l am dismayed every time I hear of an attempt to ban fireworks. I find their sights, sounds and smells exciting, and an annual night of this home science is one where all participants renew their senses of beauty and wonderment. Large public displays allow some of that, but the distance denies that magic moment for a young child waving a sparkler through the night air. Worse, the implication is that reality is for professionals, that the rest of us must take it from a distance or even via a television camera. Yes, they cost money, but I also buy flowers whose beauty is as temporary. There are a few fools who make improper use. of fireworks. Legislate against them or their supervisors, as we do against abusers of alcohol, cars, sex, drugs, and firearms. An enlightened society would use supervision and education, not bans, to face a problem of juveniles. — Yours, etc., GRAHAM MURRAY. December 17, 1986.
