Eight injured in head-on collision
Eight people were injured last evening in a head-on smash on the Lewis Pass, near Maruia Springs.
The accident which occurred shortly before 6.30 p.m. involved two cars, both believed to be carrying families.
Four accident victims were brought to Christchurch and four were taken to Reefton. Those taken to Christchurch were an adult with spinal injuries, a child with internal injuries, a man with head and knee injures, and a woman with concussion. One woman was taken
to Reefton Hospital with severe facial injuries. Three children with minor injuries were also taken to Reefton Hospital. One ambulance from Reefton and two from Amuri attended the accident. Two other ambulances from Christchurch were also sent to Lewis Pass, but stopped at Culverden.
Some of the injured people were transferred to the Christchurch ambulances for the trip to Christchurch.
An attempt to get a helicopter to the accident site failed because of bad weather.
