N.Z. teeth ‘improved’
PA New Plymouth One in five New Zealand children in Form 2 have carie-free teeth, a dramatic improvement in the last 15 years, says a retiring principal dental officer.
Mr Malcolm Cunninghame, Taranaki’s principal dental officer, said that six years ago only 6 per cent of Form 2 children were carie-free.
When Mr Cunninghame took up his present post, 15 years ago a carie-free Form 2 pupil was rare enough “to warrant a scientific paper.” Greater emphasis on education and prevention as well as fluoridation of water supplies was behind the change, said Mr Cunninghame, who retired yesterday.
