Bid to continue family link with Kumara

Special correspondent Greymouth The completion of a hat-trick of wins by the Kumara-trained mare, Eurythmics, at Riccarton last week, has set the scene for what could be one of the most emotional racetrack stories. Eurythmics, a lightly raced Palatable mare from the successful race mare, Bright Girl, is owned and trained by Nigel Stewart, a grandson of the ‘grand old man’ of the Kumara Racing Club, Mr W. H. G. (Bill) Stewart. At

this stage, Mr Stewart is considering an attempt at the Sweetman and Corcoran Kumara Gold Nuggets feature race at the Kumara meeting on January 10. “Grandad Stewart” was — apart from being a very long-serving president of the Kumara club, and its most vocal advocate when its existence was endangered — a successful owner of gallopers which he raced in Canterbury and the West Coast. Among his most treasured wins was that of Royal Tor in the 1946

Diamond Jubilee Kumara Handicap. Nigel now uses his grandfather’s racing colours.

The 1987 Nuggets is less than a month away and before then the difficult decision must be made if Eurythmics is to go for gold this season or await the benefits of another year of racing. Whatever race she contests on January 10 the emerging talent of West Coast racing will carry a proud heritage as she steps out on familiar home territory to show the ‘foreigners’ how it’s done.
