Approval likely for series
Approval, in principle, of the two major race series proposed by the Auckland-based company, National Bloodstock Corporation, Ltd, is expected to be given at the next meeting of the executive of the Trotting Conference to be held next month.
Subject to the acceptance by the promoters of certain conditions required by a special subcommittee, set up by the executive to consider all aspects of sires’ stakes racing in New Zealand, it is anticipated that approval will be given. The company proposes to run a $500,000 international series for three-year-olds in the 1990-91 season, and a $400,000 series for two-year-olds to be introduced in March, 1988.
Both series are being introduced by the company and will be administered by a specially appointed trustee board.
The executive will next month also consider draft regulations for the control of all futurity type racing. Similar controls are at present being introduced by Australian controlling bodies following escalation of the promotion of a number of similar series in that country. “Without wishing to curb any initiatives that
may benefit harness racing in New Zealand, the executive is anxious to ensure that appropriate controls for the approval of such series are introduced without jeopardising the success of established feature races,” says the conference in a release.
