Hectic year on exchanges
PA Wellington The New Zealand Stock Exchange traded more than 2200 million shares this year, with a sale value of $4.5 billion. This latest annual turnover was up 42 per cent on last year’s record turnover of 1231 million shares, which itself was a 44 per cent increase on the previous record of 852 million shares set two years earlier.
■ This year’s busiest month was August when
278 million shares were traded, more than the total annual turnover for the whole of 1982, just four years earlier, when 251 million shares were traded. The busiest month in 1982 saw trades of 29.8 million shares. Recent months this year saw 226 million shares traded in October, 256 million last month and about 170 million in December — a shortened month because of the early holiday closing.
