Exchange break
PA Wellington The New Zealand Stock Exchange closed at the end of afternoon trading yesterday and will not open again for two weeks.
All four regional trading floors will be closed during the break. Normal full-day trading will resume on January 5. Until recently the exchange always closed for a two-week holiday
break. It abandoned this policy last year and said it would normally trade on any day the banks open, but it has been forced to call a special break this year to clear the enormous backlog of bull-market paper work. Many stockbrokers will remain open over the holiday period with small staffs to handle dealings in overseas markets, as well as to clear the backlog.
