School age ‘should not be raised’
The school leaving age should not be raised, says the president of the Young Democrats, Mr John Ring. Mr Ring was responding to a recommendation by Parliament’s Education and Science Select Committee that the age be raised, possibly to 18. “While the level of education needs to be raised, this should not be done by compulsion,” Mr Ring said. “Schools already contain a significant number of people who do not learn very much simply because they don’t really want to be there. There is nothing to be gained by increasing the numbers of these people. “It is much more important to ensure that if somebody makes a bad decision early in their life they get a second chance, later.” ''
