Books gifted to museum

The Canterbury Museum has come into possession of 700 books from the Killinchy Library, which was open from about 1875 to 1920.

Four years ago, the museum was approached by Mrs Margaret Baylis, of Lincoln, who said the books had been stored for some time under the stage of the Killinchy Hall, near Leeston, but

the hall was to be demolished. This year the museum was able to offer them a home. The books cover many topics, including fiction, travel, and education. They include “New Zealand,” by Anthony Trollope, and “Recollections,” by Alfred Cox. Mrs Josie Laing, of the museum library, said

many of the books were still in very good condition because they were made from rag paper, which did not deteriorate as quickly as wood pulp paper. The books will be repaired and cleaned. With proposed alterations to the museum’s Victorian street, a small library will be included, in which the books will be displayed.
