“Iranamok” a winner
NZPA correspondent Washington Iranamok has been declared the winner by popular choice in the “New Republic” magazine’s competition to name the Iran-contra arms sales scandal. The competition brought in nearly 250 entries, with Iranamok being the pick of six people. Another popular choice lately with headline writers has been Iragua,
while Irangate is also common. However, the rules of the “New’ Republic” contest forbade any word ending in “gate” or “scam.” Second choice from the magazine’s readers was the Teflon Dome scandal. Runners-up included Contra-diction, Contra-de-ception, Contra-bind, Con-tra-versy, Contrapreneurship, Farsi-cal, Irantics, Ronnybrook and Saudi Night Fever.
