Rex Wilson in top ten
pA Wellington A Hastings athlete, Rex Wilson, has been invited to run in a special 10km road race in Hawaii in February for the top 10 racers in the United States in 1985-86. The event, organised by Diet Pepsi, involved more than 250 10km races. Times for all were sent to a computer and the top 10 have been invited to race in Hawaii on February 16. Wilson’s best time was 28min 22s in Seattle in August, 1985. He ran second behind an American runner Mark Curp
who ran 28min 13s. However, Curp's time was the fastest in the series with Wilson’s second fastest. Wilson knew the times were being computed, but he did not expect to make the top 10. “I was surprised and very pleased when they wrote and told me,” said Wilson yesterday. His air fare and accommodation will be paid for, and prize money will be on offer. "It’s hard to say what the field will be like. Although Mark (Curp) qualified fastest with me second we don’t know
what conditions or courses the others had to contend with,” said Wilson. “However, the 10 guys who will be there will more than likely be in the top in the U.S. so it will be a good field. They’ll (the organisers) probably add a few extra runners as well.” “I’m looking forward to the race. It’s good when some races carry on like this and you get some reward. Most races just finish and you move on to the next one. “This will be a good way to start the season,” he said.
