Borana out for ‘revenge’ at Alexandra Park tomorrow night

Special correspondent Auckland Borana could gain some “revenge” when he contests the Henkell Trocken Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double on the opening night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s Christmas meeting at Alexandra Park tomorrow evening. The Boyden Hanover seven-year-old defeated Master Mood at Addington on November 22, but two starts previously had been “wiped out” on the home turn in the Toyota New Zealand Cup. Borana was travelling well and mounting a run around the field when Placid Victor broke, causing Borana to be checked, losing all chance. An interrupted run three days later in the Benson and Hedges Free-For-All was not enough to stop Borana from finishing third to Master Mood and Our Mana.

Trained at Templeton by Peter Jones, Borana illustrated just how unlucky he was not to have finished closer to the winner in the Cup and Free-For-All when he narrowly beat Master Mood in the Travelodge Free-For-All at his last start.

Granted, Borana received a perfect run in behind Master Mood, which was taken on in the lead for a good way, but Master Mood had proved at his two previous starts how hard he is to peg back once he gets to the front.

Placid Victor, the co-backmarker, with Borana and Metal Mickey, in the 3200 m event tomorrow, looms as Borana’s main threat. Placid Victor showed his southern form was totally out of character when he scored a tremendous win in the Franklin Cup, over 3200 m, from a standing start, in 4:5.8 at Alexandra Park on November 21. He followed that effort up with a game fourth in Luxury Liner’s record-breaking Thames Cup last Friday. Comedy Lad will receive a 10m start from Borana and Placid Victor but that is not likely to make much difference at the end of a swiftly run 3200 m.

Should either Borana or Placid Victor make a mistake at the start then Comedy Lad, a brilliant beginner from a stand, could take advantage. Peter Jones is likely to have a most successful evening with the New Zealand Messenger candidates, Laser Lad and Imperial Time, engaged in separate heats of the Championship. Laser Lad, last season’s Lion Brown (Great) Northern Derby winner, will be a very warm favourite indeed in the First T.N.T. Messenger heat, while Imperial Time, third to his stablemate and Alba’s Reign in the Derby, will be wellsupported in the second heat, race nine.

Much interest will also centre on the performances of last season’s top fillies, Free’s Best and Kiwi River.

Kiwi River, trained at Clevedon by Roy and Barry Purdon, has been “in the wars” recently. The Knowing Bret mare stumbled in training about three weeks ago and fell, cutting a vein in her near front foot and suffering severe bruising to her off shoulder.

The bruising — a deep-seated haematoma — had to be drained to allow blood out from under the skin. The haematoma was still in evidence at Wednesday’s Pukekohe trials, where

Kiwi River managed a game third to stablemates Revae and Gaines Leigh in the main pacers’ heat. Jetbet: 8 1 TF 5 METROPOLITAN LIFE HANDICAP $6455; C 3; trotters; 2700 m 1 1086 Doona 1 D.
