Nomusa sprints attractively in Riccarton trial
By
J. J. BOYLE
The former North Islander, Nomusa, sprinted attractively at Riccarton yesterday before being taken south with other members of Michael Pitman’s big team for southern holiday racing. Nomusa was paired with Mr Magoo to run 800 m on the plough in 49.45. They started on their task easily, but quickened for the last 600 m in 35.25. Nomusa is in the James Hazlett Stakes at Wingatui tomorrow, along with her stablemates Pokare and White Lip. If all three run, Tane Matthews will be on
Pokare, Danny Frye on Nomusa, and Jackie Oakeshott on White Lip. Pitman said yesterday that Pokare might be kept for the Wairio meeting, and if he drops out of the Wingatui race Matthews wil take the ride on Nomusa. Giveaway, the Pitman stable’s hopeful for the Crofters Arms Handicap at Wingatui, finished her work by sprinting 600 m on the plough in 395. Beks, whose next race will be the Wairio Cup on Monday, sprinted 1200 m in 1:20.5, the last 600 m in 38.75. Turf Cruiser, Hypatia, and Tyrone Pal got through their 1200 m in
1:19s, the last 600 m in 37.75. Purple Tone led a Blue Vermillion filly from the Pitman team by two lengths finishing 800 m in 50.45, the last 600 m in 36.65. Darren Lass and Temuka Princess recorded 50.4 s for 800 m and a smart 36.8 s for the final 600 m. Chris Johnson will ride Darren Lass at the Wairio meeting. Aegean Princess ran in from the 600 m in 395. Bamfylde and Hurunui finished 1200 m on terms in 1:19.45, the last 600 m in 35.85. Rakau Tiffany and Quiet Riot breezed over 600 m in 375.
