Michele Bromac set to qualify for Ashburton Cup start

By

G. K. YULE

Michele Bromac looks poised to qualify for a start in the $12,500 Ashburton Cup on Boxing Day with a win in the Dominion Breweries Handicap at the Rangiora Trotting Club’s summer meeting tomorrow. After a few miserable efforts, she bounced back impressively at Methven on December 6 when she attempted to lead for the last 1400 m of 3200 m, going down in the last few strides to Frangelico, the margin being a long neck. The winner that day shattered the track record with a time of 4min 13.15, a remarkable run on such a testing course. Tomorrow’s field is one of the strongest to have competed at Rangiora for some time and there are a host of other sound prospects in a capacity line-up. French Lord finished third to Frangelico at his last start, showing that he, too, was on the verge of winning form. He sat in the open for much of the last round at Methven and tired only a little near the line. French Lord showed much potential as

a three-year-old last season and he could be back to that form, which would give him a great chance of extending Michele Bromac. Quiet Touch, one of the more talented mares in recent years, will be having her first start since May. She is one of the backmarkers on 30m, but might not be a forlorn chance. She has had quite a few runs at Sunday workouts and shaped pleasingly at the Motukarara trials on Tuesday. If produced near her best, she could be more than a match for most in this field. Radiant King could be as good as any of the others on the front, while Friendly Lord and Rolls Hanover, on 10m, cannot be counted out. Also on this mark is Lorfay, a speedy pacer down to have his first start since March. Andronicus is capable of adding interest to the finish in spite of his handicap of 20m. Floyd, Major Bromac and Lord Kara are form runners in the Transpac Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double and the middle leg of the treble. 12 6 Tri Star 12 A.
