Riccarton House
Sir,—Don Donnithorne’s description of Riccarton House (December 12) as being, “hauntingly beautiful” while decorated to celebrate Christmas of the past was apt. I had the good fortune to “man” two rosters of helpers and watched as nearly 2000 people enjoyed a nostalgic and meaningful reflection of our Christmas festival. The tranquillity of the candlelight somehow conveyed the peace that seems to have been lost from our lives today, and it was lovely to see the family groups in harmony together as they quietly absorbed the atmosphere. In stark contrast, a blow-up bobo-type doll Santa Claus outside a toyshop in a suburban shopping mall elicits aggressive punch-ups from the youngsters who pass by. Congratulations to Marianne Hargreaves and Rosie Davidson for the courage of their convictions, and let us all support the idea that Riccarton House could be a permanent reminder of our heritage and of the values that some of our forbears have left us.—Yours, etc., JENNY BUXTON. December 14, 1986.
Sir, —On behalf of the Laura Fergusson Trust for Disabled Persons I wish to take this opportunity to thank all the people who voluntarily manned the “Christmas Past” exhibition; the members of the Canterbury Flower Arrangement Society for undertaking and tending all the beautiful flower arrangements; the many people who so willingly lent valuable antiques and family treasures and the members of the public for their support in making it such a successful event. The proceeds, amounting to a very gratifying $25,000, will go towards the proposed building extensions at the home. This will enable us to care for more physically disabled younger people. To all those who so readily gave their time and abilities to ensure the success of the exhibition we extend our sincere thanks. — Yours, etc., NOELENE MCILROY, Chairman of trustees. December 16, 1986.
