National to restore subsidy of teachers
Wellington reporter
National has promised to restore the State grant towards the payment of teacher salaries in independent schools to its traditional level of 50 per cent.
The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, said that raising the grant from the level it was cut to by the Government would be the first step in National’s commitment to promoting choice in education.
The capacity to pay for choice had been undermined by Labour’s imposition of goods and services tax on education fees and its reduction in salary support to independent schools, he said. Mr Bolger gave the assurance that the grant would be restored when principals of independnet school principals met him at Parliament this week.
