Wilson pulls out of hockey tour

By

KEVIN TUTTY

Robin Wilson, of Canterbury, has withdrawn from the New Zealand hockey team to play in Argentina next March in a series of indoor and outdoor matches. Wilson announced his withdrawal this week for personal reasons and he has been replaced in the squad by the Auckland full-back, Dave Peterson.

Wilson said yesterday his withdrawal did not mean he was retiring from international hockey. “When I rang Trevor Blake (the New Zealand coach) to tell him my decision, I said I would like to be considered for future teams.

“I still value playing for

New Zealand contrary to some of the flak which we receive when we do not do well.” Wilson said that he had been away from the family farm at Halkett for three months of this year

and felt it was not fair to spend more time away when work on the farm was falling behind. His brother and mother were keen for him to make the trip, but Wilson said after consideration he made the decision to withdraw. He stressed that finance played no part in his decision. The team will leave in early March for the indoor tournament from March 3 to 7. The outdoor

tournament will be from March 9 to 15. Besides New Zealand and Argentina the indoor tournaments will include Australia, Spain and West Germany. All the teams, except Germany, will play in the outdoor tournament. Both tournaments will be in Buenos Aires.
