Soviets find ice station
NZPA-Reuter Moscow A Soviet Antarctic research station has drifted into the Wendell Sea on an iceberg but remains intact, the official news agency, Tass, said yesterday. The Druzhnaya-1 station had failed to show up on satellite photographs after the break-up of the Filchner ice shelf, where it was sited, sparking fears that it might have been borne away on a small ice fragment and capsized. But a helicopter later spotted the station on a large section of the ice shelf. Upon landing, it found the station undamaged and its runway serviceable, Tass said. Druzhnaya-1 had been on the Filchner shelf for nearly 11 years and may be used for scientific research again next field season if the iceberg proves stable.
