Trestles stolen
Functions at the North New Brighton Community Centre had been crippled by the theft of 15 trestle tables, said the centre’s caretaker, Mr Shaun Rowse, yesterday.
The tables, valued at $3OOO, were stolen last Sunday or Monday in what Mr Rowse described as “one hell of an opportunist crime.”
He said that a key has been taken from his own home, near the centre, and used to open the centre’s front door. The 15 stolen tables had been taken from under the stage where they were stored. Five tables were left, but that was not enough for most end-of-year functions.
Mr Rowse said he was angry about the theft. Not only were the 40-year-old tables valuable, but he had spent days restoring them earlier in the year. He had ruled out other centre users having borrowing the tables, as he had the only key.
The tables are about two metres long and made of white pine.
