Mr Lange irks Otago council
NZPA Dunedin The Prime Minister, Mr Lange has been accused of making “stupid" statements about regional development
He should do his homework before making claims that regional development never worked, said chairman of New Zealand’s first regional development council, the Otago Regional Development Council, Mr Don Hunter. Mr Hunter said Mr Lange had made his comments in a radio broadcast from North Otago on Wednesday. “Otago was the first regional development council and we wrote the terms of reference for the whole of New Zealand,” Mr Hunter said.
“Regional development certainly worked here, and I believe Otago would not be anywhere near so prosperous if we had not had it.” He said there were many instances of companies that had substantially increased their busi-
ness and staff because of regional development assistance at an early stage. Typical examples were Tamahine Holdings, Ltd, Sunshine Leisure Products, Ltd, Globe Export Fisheries, Ltd, and A.8.C.0. in North Otago. “Companies such as these are continually enlarging premises and expanding staff numbers and going from strength to strength,” Mr Hunter said.
The regional development programme worked under various Ministers and Governments and worked well irrespective of which Government was in office.
“It is quite wrong to say it never worked,” Mr Hunter said.
