Shout from public gallery at verdict
A High Court jury yesterday found four men guilty on charges of manufacturing heroin from pain-killing tablets by the homebake process in a flat in Warrington Street. When the verdict was returned, a man shouted from the public gallery before leaving the court and slamming the door. The jury acquitted Susan Mary Birkbeck, aged 24, a sickness beneficiary, on all charges. She was discharged by Mr Justice Williamson. The jury took almost six hours to reach the verdicts. His Honour remanded the four men in custody to December 19 for sentence.
He asked the jury and counsel to return the charts showing how to manufacture morphine and heroin by the homebake process to the registrar, Mr Keppel Smith. Those found guilty of producing heroin were: Stephen Frank Coward, aged 35, a sickness beneficiary (Mr David Fitzgibbon); Eru Lucian Hall, aged 35, a car wrecker (Mr Mervyn Glue); Christopher James Mead, aged 20, unemployed (Mr Erno Bedo) and Wayne George Hammond, aged 32, unemployed (Mr Peter Dyhrberg). Messrs Chris McVeigh and Timothy Allan appeared for the Crown.
The defence called no evidence in the trial, which began on Monday.
