Judge abused for sentence

Eighteen months imprisonment to be served in addition to his existing four-year term drew a torrent of abusive language from a man in the dock at Judge Erber in the District Court yesterday. In imposing the sentence on Shaun Patrick Broderick, aged 19, the Judge noted that it was the third time in four years that the defendant had escaped from penal institutions. Sergeant K. Morrison said Broderick escaped from Paparua Prison with two other prisoners on July 2 by removing a block from a kitchen wall. His two associates were recaptured soon after. Broderick was arrested on December 4 after being seen by a prison officer in a Hornby hotel. On charges of assault, and possessing cannabis, which he denid, Broderick was remanded to January 26 for a defended hearing. He was represented by Mr M. J. Appleby. $9OOO BAIL After a hearing in Chambers, Judge Erber granted bail of $9OOO to a

man, aged 22, facing charges including presenting a firearm at a detective sergeant. Bruce Allan Rooke, a serviceman (Mr P. H. B. Hall), was remanded, without pleading, to December 19. He is charged with presenting an airgun at Kevin Maxwell Burrowes without lawful excuse and resisting Sergeant Burrowes, on December 1.1. He is additionally charged with wilfully damaging a power pole, with an explosive, near Ruapuna Park on February 1, and stealing a $2OOO car, the property of Albert Heaton Savin, on February 24. Mr Hall said from preliminary discussions with Rooke it would appear that not guilty pleas would be entered with a depositions hearing being sought on one charge. He said he had been instructed to seek bail. In opposing bail, Sergeant Morrison said the offences, which included presenting a firearm at a police officer, were serious. He said further inquiries were being made

into “another serious matter.”

While on bail Rooke was ordered to report daily to the police. DRUG CHARGE Interim suppression of name was refused for a man, aged 66, charged with cultivating cannabis. Royce Simon Charles Sullivan, retired (Mr M. H. Rattray), was remanded at large to December 19. He is charged with committing the offence on December 8. CHARGE DENIED A charge of possessing cannabis for sale or supply was denied by Doreen Myrtle Fraser. Fraser, aged 45, a beneficiary (Mr S. C. Barker), was remanded on bail of $2OOO to February 12 for a defended hearing. Police say the alleged offence took place on November 20. IMPORTED LSD

A woman who admitted importing lysergide into New Zealand was convicted and committed in custody to the High Court for sentence on February 5, next year. Sharon Lee Cowper, aged 19, a cake finisher

(Mr C. Cameron), committed the offence on August 6. No police summary of the facts was read. NINE MONTHS JAIL A man described by the Judge as a “persistent” offender over the last 40 years was sent to prison for nine months. Harrison Te Whiu, aged 56, unemployed (Mr Errol Higgins), was for sentence on a charge of receiving a video unit, and accessories, valued at $2686, the property of the Christchurch Polytechnic. Te Whiu had 30 previous convictions for dishonesty, including four for receiving stolen property. Two of these receiving offences occurred this year, said the Judge. Te Whiu had told the police he received the video from an associate, and that he was attempting to sell it for $9OO. STOLE CAR A $3OOO car taken for a test drive was later sold to another car dealer for $2200 after the appearance had been considerably altered and registration plates had been changed, said Sergeant Kevin Morrison.

Mark Cyril Woodall, aged 26, self-employed, admitted stealing the car, the property of Johns Autoplaza, in Lincoln Road, between November 22 and December 4. He was convicted and remanded in custody to January 15, next year, for sentence.

Sergeant Morrison said that on the afternoon of November 22 the defendant went to the car dealer and’ asked to take the particular model for a test drive. The vehicle was never returned and a complaint was made to the police.

On November 29 an associate of Woodall’s sold the car to another dealer for $2200 after the appearance had been substantially altered.

Because the new dealer later became suspicious of the vehicle, he stopped the cheque, said Sergeant Morrison.

When apprehended, Woodall claimed he had originally bought the car for $lOOO from a stranger in a city hotel. Compensation of $662 was sought in respect of damage caused to the vehicle.
