Witherspoon weighs in

NZPA-Reuter New York

Tim Witherspoon signalled his intention to defend his World Boxing Association (W.8.A.) heavyweight title against a fellow American, James “Bonecrusher” Smith, today by attending yesterday’s weigh-in. Witherspoon, aged 28, has lost twice in 27 fights and is making the second defence of the title he won last January. He tipped the scales at 105.91 kg (233.5 pounds). Smith, a late substitute for Tony Tubbs who withdrew from the bout last Friday, weighed 103.41 kg (228 pounds). Witherspoon had suggested he may pull out of the fight when he called in a lawyer to examine his contractual obligation to the promoter, Don Kigg.
