Cavort wins in style
By
J. J. BOYLE
The Masterton-owned Cavort broke through for her first win in the Middlepark Plate, for two-year-olds, at Riccarton yesterday. She did the job in style, by a length and three-quarters, and it will be surprising if she fails to improve her record when she campaigns as a member of a big team from Michael Pitman’s Riccarton stable at southern holiday meetings. Mr John Clapham, the
breeder and part-owner of Cavort, prepared the Licorice Stick filly for her first race. Then he decided to send her south to Pitman as a gesture of thanks for the success the Riccarton trainer had achieved with the youngster’s half-brother, Pronto King.
Mr Clapham had to miss a trip south for Cavort’s win yesterday. He had business to attend to in Sydney, but got a reassuring report about the filly’s progress when he
phoned Pitman on Thurs-‘ day night. Cavort had the Middlepark Plate as good as won from the time she passed Balkan Snow up the straight to reach the lead. But there was also a lot to like about the run of Princess Perfection for second, in her debut for the Kerr stable. The Tau-ranga-owned Prince Echo filly picked up ground impressively in the last 100 m to peg Balkan Snow back to third.
