Cricket confidence

When the Canterbury women’s under-17 cricket team contests the national tournament in Palmerston North from Monday to Friday two players may feel confident that they have received the best possible build-up. The medium-pace bowlers, Katrina Withers and Rebecca Holmes, attended a coaching clinic with Dennis Lillee last week and benefited considerably from the advice of this world-class bowler. The national director of coaching, Nicki Turner, with several assistants, will conduct coaching sessions each morning at the tournament. During the afternoon 40-over matches will be played. Players will be able to take skill tests at an elementary or advanced level.

In the past the tournament has been for under-19 players. However, the older age group will now play a

more competitive under-20 tournament in February. Canterbury has selected a talented side. The team will be captained by the St Margaret’s College student, Maia Lewis, aged 16. Lewis, a senior club player, is a promising middle-order batsman. Several others in the team are also playing senior cricket this season and have performed creditably. Withers and Holmes, both an important part of the Riccarton attack, have several senior wickets to their credit. Louise McDrury, Nicky Drayton and Anita Bremner have also bowled well. There have been some useful innings by Sarah Helmore, Virginia Orr and Rachel Pepper.

Canterbury has won the tournament for the past three seasons.
