Australia barely steady

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian share markets closed barely steady as hopes of further activity in BHP or the media sector faded and the stocks lost ground. Changes to dividend imputation had investors looking instead to high-dividend yielding stocks such as the banks and blue-chip industrials. Brokers said investors are still expecting Bell Resources chief, Mr Robert Holmes a Court, to make another attempt on BHP. “But I don’t think anyone is expecting any short term action there,” one said. BHP was actively traded, with 1.3 million shares changing hands, but the shares closed 10c down at 872. Bell Resources gained 5c to 425 and its parent, the Bell Group, was steady at 890 after reaching 900. Elders IXL’s strong run this week came to an end and the stock lost 8c to 440. Media stocks continued to lose ground as investors took

profits while awaiting further developments on the News Corp/Herald and Weekly Times take-over front. News Corp lost 20c to 1680 and HWT 10c to 1220, while John Fairfax finished up 20c at 1100 after falling to 1070. Queensland Press, which traded as low as 1500, recovered suddenly towards the close to finish 30c down at 1550. Brokers Dominguez Barry Samuel Montagu specialled six parcels totalling 1.1 million shares at 1700. A Bell group subsidiary, Albany Broadcasters, has been increasing its stake in Queensland Press during the week. High dividend-paying banking stocks provided one of the few bright spots on the market. The ANZ rose 10c to 600, the National Australia 10c to 556 and Westpac 8c to 500. Mining stocks were easier on balance. CRA put on 8c to 728 while Comalco lost 5c to 230 and Bougainville 3c to 305. Vamgas passed Santos’ offer price of 300, finishing 5c up at 310.
