Lamb sales lower than last year

PA Wellington Sales of New Zealand lamb in Britain was “only steady” this week and were lower than at the same time last year, said the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its weekly market report. On the Smithfield market this week, New Zealand PL grade lambs were quoted at SNZ3.BI to $3.97 a kg. The British meat trade continued its recent poor run, although the beef trade was expected to improve closer to Christmas. Domestic lamb prices had risen 7p a pound at auction since last week and about 9p a pound, ex-hooks. This improvement is because of an active export trade. United States imported manufacturing beef prices had fallen, because of increased carcases from New

Zealand, with New Zealand exporters accepting the lower prices offered, and an already weak domestic beef market. Traders were hoping that market had stopped falling. The average price for imported bull beef fell by US3.SC to 98c a pound c.i.f. (SNZ4.2I a kg), and cow beef fell 0.5 c to 93.5 c a pound c.i.f. (SNZ4.O2 a kg).
