Admiring “Parson’s pink”
The Companion to Roses. By John Fisher. Viking, 1986. 225 pp. Illustrations. $45 (approx.). (Reviewed by Thelma Strongman)
Yet another excellent publication by Viking, the hardback label of Penguin Books, is an informal encyclopaedia of roses by James Fisher. In alphabetical order, this book contains a great deal of background information on roses and associated interests. It is possible to inform oneself on such diverse topics as “Parson’s Pink China,” "Canon Ellacombe’s Bitton,” and “the Dean of Rochester’s enthusiasm.”
Compass roses, curiosity roses, Victor Hugo, and rose windows are all discussed in the book although some of the entries tend to be listed in a somewhat idiosyncratic manner such as “Rosen Kavalier, Der,” and “Postage stamps, roses on.” These
titles and the writing style prompt one to think that despite the factual content, humour lies simmering behind the author’s typewriter.
Answers to most questions concerning roses can probably be found in this book. It is possible to distinguish a Boursault from a Bourbon, to plunge into a deep discussion on rose scents, and to find out about the best cut roses for commercial cultivation. There is a selection of books for rosarians and a list of demonstration rose gardens in America and much more.
“The Companion to Roses” is beautifully illustrated in black-and-white and with some excellent colour plates. Altogether, this is a charming and splendidly produced book which would please anyone with an interest in roses or gardening.
