Books for very young children need to be robustly made, and to have clear illustrations and a simple story line. This sample illustration comes from a series based on railway stories by the Rev. W. Awdry, with pictures by Tony Wells. The book is “Percy to the Rescue” (Heinemann, $6.95). Percy has a matching volume — “Thomas Goes to Town.”
