Spinning guide
The Ashford Book of Spinning. By Anne Field. Reed Methuen, 1986. $24.95. Mention spinning in New Zealand and Ashford spinning wheels are usually mentioned next. Talk about teaching spinning, and Anne Field’s name comes up equally as a matter of course. Her book is an excellent guide for those wanting to learn spinning, or for' spinners who wish to improve their technique. As a novice spinner, I found my lump-producing tendancies smoothing out when I followed her expert advice. She covers every aspect of spinning, from choosing and maintaining a wheel to knitting the finished yarn with suitable pride. The methods of spinning novelty yarns such as boucle, crepe, flecks, and fibres other than wool are also laid out in an easy-to-follow way, along with ways to dye and felt wool, and knitting patterns. This is a book which deserves shelfspace on any ’ handcraft-minded person’s bookcase.—Lee Matthews.
