Trawling for salmon
Sir, — Well, it is that time again. As soon as a few salmon are caught in the Rakaia, the trawlers arrive and fish across the rivermouth. From frequent observation, no trawlers were seen fishing this area from May to November. This is definitely target fishing. I read recently that salmon caught this way was supposed to be tendered for, but in today’s “Press,” you say that' the boats can sell netted salmon the same as any fish by paying $1.50 a kilogram levy. I wonder if the shareholders in N.Z. Salmon realise that their profits from Tentburn, by the Rakaia, are going to the trawlers? I feel sorry for the rod fishermen and
women who spend thousands of dollars in sports shops each year and then wonder why it is so hard to catch a salmon. — Yours, etc., V. R. MAFFEY. Rakaia, December 10, 1986.
