Lobster krill found in Estuary

Residents of South New Brighton awoke yesterday to find thousands of lobster krill washed up round the Estuary. The krill were probably washed up during the night or on Monday and were giving off a strong odour yesterday morning because they were beginning to decompose, said Mr Bill Gillespie, a supervising fishing officer in the Ministry of Fisheries. The krill, about Icm to 2.5 cm long, had been carried to several parts of the Estuary but were mainly found along the

Spit. Mr Gillespie said it was the first time he had heard of krill being swept into the Estuary, although it often occurred along the coast. On-shore currents were probably the cause, he said. Mr Gillespie thought it unlikely that the krill would be removed.

“They will soon break down and disappear.” No complaint had been received by the Christchurch City Council or the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society.
