Rubbish contractors object to price rise

Commercial rubbish contractors stormed the Metropolitan Refuse Station in Parkhouse Road just before closing time yesterday for the second successive afternoon.

A spokesman for the contractors, Mr Noel Dick, said that 16 trucks converged on the site just before the 4 p.m. closing time. It was a protest action against the $30.80 a

tonne charge. The trucks were allowed to use the weighbridge and dump their loads before leaving. Mr Dick said that there would be no protest action today because the Metropolitan Refuse Committee had agreed to talks on Monday with the contractors and union representatives. If the contractors did not get anything out of the

meeting they would be “back at square one,” he said. What angered the contractors most was a 40 per cent increase in charges on August 1. They had risen again on October 1 with goods and services tax. Some contractors were paying $llO a load and there was no alternative way of disposing of the rubbish, Mr Dick said.
