Support for Port Hills hydro plan

Support in principle has been given by the Heathcote County Council to further investigation of a proposed hydro-electric generation scheme on the Port Hills. The scheme has been suggested by the Port Hills Energy Authority which wants support in principle, from both Heathcote and Lyttelton councils, to be a prefeasibility study. Heathcote councillors last evening agreed to the study on the basis that

water used would be returned to the reservoirs after use. The initial proposal before the authority was designed so that the water — which would flow at 1.25 cumecs — would flow into the natural watercourse of the area. The authority’s director of engineering, Mr lan Bywater, said there was no reason why the water could not be put back into the reservoir because it would not be contaminated in any way.
