Pair yell ‘fascist’ at Pope
NZPA Sydney Two men were charged with offensive behaviour after chanting “fascist” at Pope John Paul II at Sydney University. The police said the two men, one wearing an academic gown, were invited guests but not part of the university community. The men chanted “Antiwomen, anti-gay, fascist Pope go away” as the Pontiff rose to address academics and students in the university quadrangle. They were about 40 metres from the Pope and waved banners as they chanted. The crowd booed and spectators nearby ripped one of the banners. Police converged on the two men and hustled them away. The Pope waited by the microphone until the men were out of sight before starting to speak. Police said two men, aged 34 and 36, were charged with offensive behaviour and would appear in Newtown Court on December 18.
