Oxford velvet competition
The second Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral velvet competition promises to be a big success. Leading firms have offered good sponsorship and a local farmer, Mr John Barber, has donated a cup for the hybrid class. The Wilson and Neill Trophy for the red deer section will once again be presented and Mair Foods has offered prize money for the hybrid section. The addition of the hybrid section is new to allow the many farmers throughout Canterbury who farm other than red deer to participate. It is hoped that velvet from as far away as Nelson may be present. The competition will be held on December 12 with entries closing on the day at 1.15 p.m. Velveting is well under way at present and it is hoped that farmers will keep their velvet to enter on the day. The winning entries will be displayed at the Oxford show in April next year. Judging will begin at 2 p.m.
