Fete funds for Grenada Day Care Centre

All funds raised at the Saint John of God Hospital Fete this Sunday will go toward the running of the Grenada Day Care Centre for the sick and elderly. According to one of the organisers of the fete, Mr John Lagan, it has been three years since the day care programme was set up to help cater for those caring for sick or elderly relatives at home. With the “very demanding” role of caring for a relative at home, the order of Saint John of God saw a need for a day care centre to look after the sick and elderly while the person normally caring for them could enjoy some time to themselves. Because the day care centre does not receive any subsidies from government sources, most of Grenada’s running costs are met by the order, and Saint John of God Hospital. In spite of this, Mr Lagan says, the centre would be inoperative if it were not for the “dedicated service” of volunteer staff and transport drivers who bring the sick

and elderly to Grenada. A small fee is charged to those using Grenada day care, but Mr Lagan says this only provides for the transport, lunch, morning and afternoon tea. To “remain viable” Mr Lagan says the Grenada has to increase its yearly income by at least 20 per cent. This Sunday’s fete is hoped to raise funds to help meet that necessary increase.
