Free electronic burglar alarm

Car theft for joy riding and more serious crime believed to be higher in Northern Ireland than in any other part of the United Kingdom. Consequently, anyone buying a Vauxhall or an Opel — both products of General Motors — is offered an electronic burglar alarm system free of charge. However, there is a fitting charge of about $lOO. Although the number of Vauxhalls and Opels being stolen in Ulster is declining over all, there has been an upsurge in the number of thefts of the sporty versions by young joy riders.

The alarm system being offered is General Motor’s own IMS 1000 system. It arms itself when the driver locks the car’s door. There is an independent battery back-up and a siren which sounds even if disconnected from the car’s electrical system. A motion sensor and an accessory guard protect specific items. On returning to the car a monitor tells whether an attempt has been made to tamper with it.
