Flowering shrub that’s good garden value
GARDENING
by
Mike Lusty
Welgelas are good value in the garden. Of freeflowering nature, hardy, and generally trouble free, these deciduous shrubs are mostly medium sized, compact growers. Although the branches tend to arch over when in flower, this promotes new shoots from the more upright regions.
The foxglove-like flowers appear on laterals from last year’s wood. Any pruning should be done as soon as flowering is over. Some thinning may occasionally be desirable, by cutting old growth right out at ground level. Forms and hybrids available include a yellow and a silver margined one, another has purplish leaves. Flowers range from white to deep red,
and although the main flowering period is through the spring a
second flush is often produced in late summer or early autumn.
