Protest by Whitcoulls employees
All shop employees at Whitcoulls in central Christchurch had their lunch hour at the same time yesterday as a protest against the employers’ offer of a 5 per cent wage increase in the national retail (non-food) award.
The shop stayed open, with the management serving customers, while members of the shop employees’ union were away. Workers at the DIC store in Colombo Street took a similar lunch break last week.
