Death of Chief Ombudsman
PA Wellington The Chief Ombudsman, Mr Lester Castle, died yesterday. Members of Parliament stood in silence when his death was announced by the Leader of the House, Mr Palmer, when the House resumed after the dinner adjournment. Noting that the Chief Ombudsman was an officer of Parliament, he said Mr Castle had died yesterday afternoon.
Mr Castle had served his office with great distinction and the House
greatly regretted his sudden passing, Mr Palmer said. The Opposition House leader, Mr Birch, said Mr Castle had earned the respect of both sides of Parliament.
“His will be a very sad loss for Parliament and New Zealand.”
The Speaker, Dr Wall, said it was appropriate that the House should express condolences to Mr Castle’s family and mark the loss of such a "distinguished servant” with a silence.
