Annual classic has assisted many charities
When all the loose ends have been tied up, the organising committee of "The Press" Garden City Classic, hopes to have at least $lO,OOO to contribute towards this year’s charity.
It will be the tenth year that the Lions and Round Table have combined to stage this popular tournament, which, since its inception, has raised about $lOO,OOO for Canterbury charities.
This year the proceeds of the two day tournament at the Harewood Golf Club will be used to buy a “toast-rack” vehicle to transport disabled people around Oraaa Park, which coincidentally, is also celebrating its tenth anniversary.
Harewood has been the venue for the tournament in each of the 10 years, principally because it is
the only club with two full sized lay-outs which are needed to cope with the large number of players who tradtttonally fioefc to this tournament The Gardm Ob'CkdMc replaced a profemiotia! tournament which in earlier years was held Russley. More than 3500 goffers have been involved in the classic in the last 10 years, and more than 500 businesses have sponsored holes or made generous donations of prizes. Undoubtedly the tournament is one of the biggest fund raising events for charity in the city, and the proceeds are just reward for the excellent organisation of the Canterbury Round Tables and the Lions Club of Christchurch. Organisations and institutions who have bene-
fited from the classic in previous years have been the Christchurch Women’s Hoqpttal, the Christchurch the New Zealand fire service, the Canterbury Surf Life-saving Association, the St John Ambulance AsßOdattoe, Barbados Day Care Centres, the Canterbury Co-ordination Council for the HHKficapped, the Salvation Army, and the Canterbury Asthma Society. In 1984 more than $16,000 was raised to buy three electric powered wheelchairs, one each for the Salvation Army's three Christchurch senior citizen homes at Addingion, Resthaven and Bethany. Last year the proceeds were used to buy two oxygen concentrators for the Asthma Society.
