Licensing laws

Sir, — We agree with M. A. Hogan and R. M. Henare (November 18) regarding their concern about the liquor laws committee report. It appears that this committee has virtually ignored any submissions from groups like ourselves who have public health as their priority. They have refused to accept the validity of overseas research which shows conclusively that the more easily available alcohol is the more will be drunk. Their argument is that legislation cannot prevent alcohol abuse. But the very fact that 'there has always been special legislation for alcohol sales implies an ac-

ceptance of the fact that alcohol is a substance with inherent dangers, not present; in other legal consumable items. M,P.’s have a grave responsibility when voting on liquor law reform. We believe that if M.P.s take this responsibility seriously, and if they truly care about the quality of public health, they will veto any changes that will make liquor more easily available. — Yours, etc., VIVIEN DALEY, DIANE SHANNON,

Towards Ending Alcohol Misuse. November 19, 1986.
