Transplant baby dies
NZPA-Reuter London A four-month-old British baby, who seven weeks ago became the world’s youngest heart and lung transplant patient, died of lung failure yesterday, hospital officials said.
Jem Paterson was only 10 weeks old when he underwent the operation at a hospital outside London.
He responded well initially, but developed breathing problems with his new lungs and had to be put back on a ventilator four weeks after the
operation. “Sadly, Jem’s lungs failed, though his new heart was working well,” said the hospital director, David Thomson.
