Lions clubs should soon admit women

PA Auckland Women will be allowed to become full members of Lions clubs before long, according to a future president of the service club’s- international association.

Judge Brian Stevenson, the first vice-president of Lions Clubs International, said he believed a resolution to remove the word “male” from the constitution would be passed at the next world- conference, in Taiwan in 1987. “From the feedback I’m getting, I think it has a good chance of succeeding,” said Judge Stevenson.

A similar resolution was put forward at this year’s conference, where 59 per cent of delegates voted in

favour of it, but a majority of 66 per cent is necessary to make a constitutional change. “Society is changing," said Judge Stevenson, "unfortunately, we have a constitution that was drawn up in the 19205.” Under the existing rules, women may only join the Lionesses — a sort of “auxiliary” of the Lions.

If the resolution was passed, each individual club would have to decide whether to allow women members.

Judge Stevenson is in New Zealand for a Lions district convention, for the area between Auckland and Te Kauwhata and including the Pacific Islands.
