Croquet pavilion burgled, burnt
PA Gore The Gore Croquet Club, which will stage a national championship next year, has lost part of its headquarters and equipment in a. suspicious fire. The fire at the Shelton Green Pavilion had been burning for-at least an hour in the early morning when it was discovered. Detective Wayne Deafon, of the Gore police, said the clubrooms had been burgled beforehand.
“Nothing appeared to have been stolen but the fire started in the back addition to the building and the door was closed - behind it,” he said. The police are treating the fire as suspicious. The main- part of the club rooms, built in 1922 and used as a lounge, was smoke-damaged, said the Club captain, Mrs Pat Osborne. The Gore club has about 60 members and . the largest lawn in Southland.
