Aurum and Shiny Woman top chances

B y

STEVE WILSON

With the withdrawal of

Magic Command through injury, the Derek Cop-land-trained pair of Aurum and Shiny Woman appear the best chances for South Island kennels in the Lion Brown N.Z. Championship heats, at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park today. The final on Thursday evening carries the largest stake for a greyhound race in New Zealand of $5OOO. The championship has attracted hounds from all over the country, with Uli Uli and Our Little One heading a strong North Island team.

The first qualifying heat has brought together an even field, and, with the exception of Talking Star and Safari, all hounds are Canterbury-trained. Tredeka Do has been running some sound races since returning to the track after overcoming a leg injury, and he is sure to fight out the finish,

whiie Cherry Tree Hill has won twice in recent weeks at the park at good odds.

Miss Janine has shown potential and this could be her chance to win a major race. She has a powerful finishing sprint, and if she can be handy enough on the turn she will be a big chance.

The Auckland-trained Uli Uli will make his appearance in the second heat. He was an easy winner at his last outing at Q.E.11 Park in July and appears likely to be a warm favourite.

Shiny Woman could well provide Uli Uli with strong opposition after winning in 33.57 s at her last start over 560 m. Seldom has this time been beaten, and the Bright and Shiny-Airwoman bitch is sure to go a bold race. After taking time to master the track, the New Zealand Oaks winner Aurum looks to be improving with each start there, and should prove hard to beat in the third heat.

The daughter of Metal Band-Misty Isle has run some slashing times this season and looks set for a rewarding week. She not only begins well but the way she runs her races >ut suggests that it will .ake a good dog to beat her.
